ERT: Lead By Example

This reproducible really applies to all who seek to “Engage & Run Together.” We owe it to our brothers and sisters to follow Jesus, to live, care, and serve in a way that helps them follow Him, to grow in grace, to be conformed to the image of His Son. Whether we think of ourselves as newcomers, steady participants, emerging or established “leaders”, our example affects those around us.

Live as an example. Sincerely do what you’re asking others to do, starting with an attitude of continuous repentance, a continuous emphasis on living in the presence of God. And actively living the Reproducibles: Inductive Bible Study, Conversational Prayer, Scripture Memorization, personal and professional Excellence, Grow Together, Pray & Plan (P&P).

The Fort Benning statue says it clearly:

Let’s go, get moving, do what I’m doing, Follow Me!

The spiritual warrior-leader is strong, as expected of a military leader,

  • not threatened or offended by different points of view, and able to bring a discussion back to “the main things”, for they “are the plain things”.
  • able to admit that some questions are “above my pay grade”, sometimes to be left there, sometimes to be taken up with a chaplain or another leader in his/her “abundance of counselors” (Pr 24:5-6).
  • gaining strength by absorbing and acting on The Word, able to receive wise guidance, new ideas, Spirit-led reproof, Godly counsel.

The leader knows there are hungry lions prowling about, giants in the land, and that

“We should by all means go up and take possession of it, for we will surely overcome it.” (Numbers 13:30)

For us, to “take possession” is to fully follow the Lord in a way that others recognize as real, strong in Him, pressing toward the mark so that we converge individually and as a community on what He intends for us. As we become living examples of what Paul taught Timothy in the presence of many witnesses, we will be able to teach others also to Engage & Run Together.

Help the group grow together.  Make sure the pleasure of warm fellowship doesn’t distract us from concern for the lost or individual closeness to God. Ask the Holy Spirit, and P&P to find the balance. Stick to the things make for peace and the building up of one another (Romans 14:19). Remember Jesus, how He reacted, how He related. Keep the focus on Him.

Review, discuss, and use the seven reproducibles and the foundational Bible verses. Ask the Holy Spirit to guide to the right understanding and application of any Bible passage being discussed. Use marginal references to find clarification from related passages. Explore together; avoid imposing personal or denominational conclusions. Begin the Bible study sequence with the 3 sets of memory verses found at the link below. Newcomers can go through them “offline” or when the group does them each year (or as locally needed). The idea is to have used everything you’ll need to reproduce this approach at your next duty station.

Pray and Plan to select follow-on studies, plan outreaches & activities:

  • Some may be unfamiliar with basic Christian standards of conduct; others may have learned and rejected them earlier. The P&P could choose a study in Ephesians, Colossians, Timothy or Peter as a way for them to discover the need and rationale for lifestyle changes.
  • Prioritize low-overhead activities … chapel services when available & small group gatherings in living or work areas; enjoy the occasional “big deal” activities without becoming dependent on them.
  • Think of “fellowship” as purposeful activity together: study, prayer, planning, serving … “team building” by engaging together! Try a before-duty-hours Bible Study, a trip to the pistol range for Chapel people, P&P and run a service project! The spiritual nature of the team is caught from the unforced way we offer all aspects of life, including work & relationships, to Jesus!

In any context we soon learn “the rules” we have to live with, and eventually find that most of them actually make sense for that context. Given the realities of military culture, it takes time for some to feel free to interact or take initiative in a small-group context. They hesitate out of respect for people of higher rank or deeper experience. Help them know they really are welcome to interact, to question, to explore and discuss and still honor the old saying that “while the senior never remembers his/her rank, the junior never forgets.”

We Engage & Run Together to help people move:

  • from external motivation (food, great worship music, good fellowship, etc)
  • to internal motivation (pleasing Christ, serving Him and each other, concern for the lost),
  • from consumer to contributor, from passive to proactive,
  • from limiting faith to a place or centrally planned activities to engaging with others.

Invite, include, & empower emerging leaders. Make ways for emerging leaders to trust God for empowerment to do “greater things”, to grow from speaking up during a Bible study, to co-leading a session, joining a “leaders meeting”, walking a newcomer through the reproducibles and verse sets, starting up another group, … 

 “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do, he will do also; and greater works than these he will do; because I go to the Father.” (John14:13, NASB)

Work with Chaplains, Pastors, and other Christian ministries to build the Kingdom of God. There’s no place for power struggles and competition; they are destructive.

For wherever there is jealousy and selfish ambition, there you will find disorder and evil of every kind. (James 3:16, NLT)

Encourage and help individual members to establish and maintain personal Bible study, prayer and obedience to God in every area of their lives.

Encourage—To give courage to; to give or increase confidence of success; to inspire with courage, spirit, or strength of mind; to embolden; to animate; to incite; to inspirit. (Noah Webster)

Help—To aid; to assist; to lend strength or means towards effecting a purpose; as, to help a man in his work; to help the memory or the understanding. (Noah Webster)

Obedience—is compliance with a command, prohibition or known law and rule of duty prescribed; the performance of what is required or enjoined by authority, or the abstaining from what is prohibited, in compliance with the command or prohibition. To constitute obedience, the act or forbearance to act must be in submission to authority; the command must be known to the person, and his compliance must be in consequence of it, or it is not obedience. Obedience is not synonymous with obsequiousness; the latter often implying meanness or servility, and obedience being merely a proper submission to authority. That which duty requires implies dignity of conduct rather than servility. Obedience may be voluntary or involuntary. Voluntary obedience alone can be acceptable to God. (Noah Webster)

Servile—Such as pertains to a servant or slave; slavish; mean; such as proceeds from dependence; as servile fear; servile obedience. Held in subjection; dependent. Cringing; fawning; meanly submissive; as servile flattery. (Noah Webster)

“And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds.” Hebrews 10:24 NIV

The aforementioned verse from Hebrews may sound a bit draconian if one is not familiar with horses. The spur is but one of many of the rider’s “aids” that allow for precision guidance of the trusty steed. In short, the rider’s aids represent the non-verbal language used to let the horse know what is required of it. It would follow that the words spur, provoke, encourage, stimulate, help or motivate, used to translate the Greek word paroxusmos (G3948) means significantly more than mere “incitement (to good).” It also presupposes a need to be spurred! When used together, the rider’s aids can guide the mount through all manner of intricate maneuvers necessary to provide utility. The choice of aids then must fit the current circumstance. The current circumstance for believers in the military is war and lengthy repeated family separations.

The Apostle Paul has given us a few words for when life really SUX, a Navy aviation weather term (invented for the Simoom—A strong, hot, sand-laden wind of the Sahara and Arabian deserts) that indicates an indefinite ceiling, visibility fully obscured in blowing sand; not a good day to fly):

“But this precious treasure─this light and power that now shine within us─is held in perishable containers, that is, in our weak bodies. So everyone can see that our glorious power is from God and is not our own. We are pressed on every side by troubles, but we are not crushed and broken. We are perplexed, but we don't give up and quit. We are hunted down, but God never abandons us. We get knocked down, but we get up again and keep going. Through suffering, these bodies of ours constantly share in the death of Jesus so that the life of Jesus may also be seen in our bodies” (2 Corinthians 4:7-10 New Living Translation).

The problem for us as believers is to discover whether it is suffering for the faith OR suffering in the faith that is occurring. The answer can be found in our obedience (or lack thereof). If suffering in the faith, then no amount of perseverance, tenacity, or intestinal fortitude will keep you in the battle. But that is exactly where our fallen nature will lead us because we are above all arrogant! The other extreme is to wait for a holy lightening bolt to strike that will change the attitude of our heart and allow us walk along in life surrounded by clouds of heavenly bliss (Star Trek XIV—Life in the tail of a comet).

John Wesley, in “A Plain Account of Christian Perfection”, says that we ought not to wait “in careless indifference, or indolent inactivity; but in vigorous, universal obedience, in a zealous keeping of all the commandments, in watchfulness and painfulness, in denying ourselves, and taking up our cross daily; as well as in earnest prayer and fasting, and a close attendance on all the ordinances of God. And if any man dream of attaining it any other way (yea, or of keeping it when it is attained, when he has received it even in the largest measure), he deceiveth his own soul. It is true, we receive it by simple faith; but God does not, will not, give that faith unless we seek it with all diligence, in the way which He hath ordained.”

When horses have an itch on their neck, they will find another horse and nibble and bite the other horse’s neck exactly where they themselves itch. They are saying, “scratch me in the same spot.” In addition to the many free resources, Bible studies, books, newsletters, etc., that CMF provides to our membership, we also have a small cadre of experienced Christians serving fulltime in key locations. He is Alive

Last year marked the 350th anniversary of the publication of Paradise Lost, by John Milton. It is the greatest epic poem in the English language and certainly one of the greatest works in Western literature. Sadly, the anniversary went by largely unnoticed. What is encouraging is that this work has been translated more frequently in the last 30 years than in the preceding 300 and mostly in non-Western languages.

Milton began this work in 1652, the year he became completely blind and lost his first wife. He dictated the more than 11,500 lines of verse to his nephew, Edward, in perfect form in groups of 10 to 30. He finished this work in 1665.

The importance of this work to the Christian faith is that is is a collection of mirrors displaying evil as disarmingly close in appearance to the good! In 1639 he wrote in his commonplace book, “In moral evil much good may be mixed, and that with singular craft.”

This is all too apparent in the news of our day where we find our human depravity being displayed in all of our institutions. How can this be in a nation that was founded subsequent to the “Great Awakening”?

Jonathan Edwards, who was the most gifted theologian and philosopher ever to set foot on this continent, said it best in his work, “A Treatise Concerning Religious Affections.” It was written principally to describe the quenching of this amazing awakening of which Edwards was its chief preacher.

It was Edwards assertion that there is no greater importance of understanding than this: “What are the distinguishing qualifications of those that are in favor with God, and entitled to his eternal rewards?” He goes on to say that, “Though it be of such importance, and though we have clear and abundant light in the word of God to direct us in this matter, yet there is no one point, wherein professing Christians do more differ one from another.” With the number of Christian Denomination now surpassing 40,000 it is not hard to see that the saints are separated by a distance spiritually in a similar manner as the stars within the multitude of galaxies in the universe.

“It is a hard thing to be a hearty zealous friend of what has been good and glorious, in the late extraordinary appearances, and to rejoice much in it; and at the same time to see the evil and pernicious tendency of what has been bad, and earnestly to oppose that. But yet, I am humbly but fully persuaded, we shall never be in the way of truth, nor go on in a way acceptable to God, and tending to the advancement of Christ’s kingdom till we do so. There is indeed something very mysterious in it, that so much good, and so much bad, should be mixed together in the church of God; as it is a mysterious thing, and what has puzzled and amazed many a good Christian, that there should be that which is so divine and precious, as the saving grace of God, and the new and divine nature dwelling in the same heart, with so much corruption, hypocrisy, and iniquity, in a particular saint.”

From Milton to Edwards we see the threat is true Christianity mixed with the counterfeit not discerned and distinguished by which Satan has enjoyed his greatest advantage against the cause and kingdom of Christ (Edwards, paraphrase mine). The magnificent ramparts of the city of Mansoul become of none effect when the “Eye-gate, Ear-gate, Mouth-gate, Feel-gate, and Nose-gate are left open to the enemy as he approaches in a form over which the inhabitants think they have dominion (The Holy War, John Bunyan). The personification of virtues are thus extinguished in Bunyan’s allegory and Mansoul lay shipwrecked and lying in a pool of blood from self-inflicted wounds unable to be extricated (Edwards, Paraphrase mine).

It is fair to say that Jesus requires us to follow Him, not just attend Him. The former leads to “experiences of saving affections,” while the latter results in “those manifold fair shows and glistering appearances, by which they are counterfeited.” (Edwards)

Perhaps it is almost prophetic that Easter will be celebrated on April 1st this year. For it is written of a time when even the saints will be deceived. May we find this as an opportunity to ensure that we are on the “highway of holiness” that Isaiah described which is Christ Himself. For He said, “I AM the High Way, the truth and he life, and no one comes to the Father but by me.”

This immutable Christ is still available to us at the ground level. We need not try to climb into a second-story window, that is to “bring Christ down.” Nor do we have to dig a tunnel under a wall, that is to “raise Christ up” (Calvary Road, Roy Hession. Illusion to Romans 10:6-8). The foot of the Calvary Cross, according to Hession, is the place where the proud stiff-necked “I” is made to bow low until it becomes a “C”! This is what Andrew Murray call “Absolute Surrender.” This then is what fueled the Great Awakening and birthed a nation of which Tocqueville spoke: “Not until I went into the churches of America and heard her pulpits, aflame with righteousness, did I understand the secret of her genius and power. America is great because she is good, and if America ever ceases to be good, America will cease to be great.”

This Easter let us not just go through the motions of attendance but rather prepare our hearts with the cloak of thankfulness for this so great a salvation! For Christ has risen just as He said! Death could not hold Him in the grave. By his vicarious sacrifice He has purchased us out of the market place of sin and delivered us from the sinful travails of bondage into the liberty of His kingdom.

May we rejoice with renewed exuberance as we ponder the immensity of the Grace that saved us and extol with our loudest voice joined in unity that Christ has Risen! He has Risen indeed! Now Go and tell somebody what Jesus did for you!

More than a few years have passed since I enlisted in the ranks of Christian Military Fellowship. I joined CMF after hearing a presentation by a CMF staff member to a small group of soldiers gathered for a Bible study in a chapel at Ft. Devens, MA. This “prodigal son” had returned home not long before, and I was excited about my rediscovered faith and hungry for both the Word and Christian fellowship. As a result of that hunger, I had joined the small group that met once a week over lunch at Independence Chapel. What I heard about CMF that day really caught my attention!

I heard about a fellowship of believers who wore the uniforms of our Armed Forces. They were ordinary people, like this young NCO, with an extraordinary vision! They felt called of God to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with their comrades-in-arms, and further, to help each other grow while serving in our country's military. I learned that the purpose of CMF’s small staff, in Denver, Colorado, was to help us “ordinary folks” accomplish the mission defined in the CMF motto— “To Win…To Disciple…To Equip…To Win.” In other words, CMF wasn't about an organization’s ministry TO the military, but about encouraging and supporting ministry IN the military. The “minister” IN the military was supposed to be the “man in the mirror"!

Through the years, the mission and goals of CMF haven't changed. If you read the CMF Orientation Brief today (available on the CMF website “Resource” page), you will find the following statement: "We are a PEER ministry TO military people BY military people WITHIN the military society."

You might be asking "Why?", and that's certainly a valid question. I found a large part of the answer to that question, already in practice, in a book called "Revolution in World Missions," written by K.P. Yohanan and first published in 1986.

K.P. is the founder and President of Gospel for Asia, an organization dedicated to sending support to native pastors in Asia. "Revolution in World Missions" discusses the shift from “colonial" missionary efforts sponsored by Western nations (foreigners), due in large part to countries in Asia gaining their independence from the rule of colonial governments (foreigners) and the tossing out of colonial missionaries (foreigners) along with their governments. The leadership of remaining Christian missionary efforts fell to the native believers, Christians born and raised in the now free countries and remote areas of much of Asia. The spreading of the Gospel became primarily an “inside job,” accomplished by indigenous believers. Was there still a role for the West? Absolutely!

K.P. Yohanan aptly remarks in his book:, "God still sovereignly calls Western missionaries to do unique and special tasks in Asia. But we must understand that the primary role for Westerners now should be to support efforts of indigenous mission works through finances and intercessory prayer."

What may have begun out of necessity (foreigners tossed out) has actually resulted in evangelization and missionary work in much of Asia that is far more effective than the efforts under the leadership of the westerners (foreigners). There are several reasons for the increased effectiveness of native missionaries, attested to by the many organizations that, like Gospel for Asia, are solely dedicated to supporting native pastors and indigenous mission boards:

“They already know the culture, the customs, the laws, the language. So they encounter fewer barriers in witnessing for Christ. They can go where no “foreigner” ever could.” - World-Wide Missions

“… the most effective work done in many foreign countries was that carried forward by the nationals themselves. There were many arguments in favor of such missionary endeavors. They were already on the field. They knew the language and the customs.…I later discovered there is another sound argument for national programs—the fact that the work cannot be closed down where there is any type of religious freedom at all.” Dr. Basil Miller. Founder, World-Wide Missions

Indigenous means, “native to the land.” A palm tree from Puerto Rico transplanted in Pennsylvania will not survive because it is not indigenous. But fertilizer from Pennsylvania applied to a palm tree in Puerto Rico will make it grow better in its native soil. Indigenous Christianity is not an imported denomination or other foreign organization. A Christian group started by foreigners hardly ever becomes truly indigenous. But an indigenous group can be inspired by visiting speakers from other countries (foreigners) and strengthened by financial help from believers overseas (foreigners), provided it is not used to buy control.” - Christian Aid U.S.A.

Let's summarize. Indigenous ministry would be ministry carried out by those who are:

  • Native to the land,
  • Already in the field,
  • Knowledge of the culture, language, customs, and laws,
  • Cannot be expelled,
  • More effective, and
  • Can go where no foreigner could

“Culture” is emphasized above because there is a distinct culture in the military. If the military can be viewed as a culture, the different branches can be called sub-cultures. Taken one step further, there are even sub-sub-cultures in each of the branches of service. I spent my entire career, aside from training and certain schools, in the Special Forces culture. If you are a current or past member of one of the branches of service, you know exactly what I mean. I need explain it no further. Suffice it to say that every culture or sub-culture has its own language, customs, and laws. Outsiders to the culture are viewed as foreigners in the same sense as the colonialists mentioned earlier in this article.

That last characteristic is strongly emphasized because, years ago, an Army Chaplain invited two young soldiers to a Saturday morning men's breakfast fellowship at a local church of his endorsing denomination. At one point the Chaplain told the assembled group: "These two men go places where I will never be able to set foot."

That Chaplain’s few words said it all then, and they still ring true today. They apply to every man and woman in uniform who, unashamed of the Gospel, live out their faith where no Chaplain will ever set foot.

And that's what CMF is about!

We sometimes confuse our own culture with spiritual things.  In America there exists within us an innate desire to succeed as an individual.  Why else would we have team sports in order to learn teamwork?  When we join the military we learn a new concept called unit cohesion.  It is a long recognized phenomenon that is essential for successful war fighting.  Unit cohesion goes well beyond the idea of mere teamwork into an arena where men and women place their lives and trust into the hands of those with whom they serve.  General Krulac, Commandant of the Marine Corps (former), described it in this way: “We must do everything we can to enhance the transformation of young men and women into the marines that our corps needs to win battles.  I firmly believe that unit cohesion is an integral part of the transformation process.  Marines must possess and feel the absolute trust, subordination of self, the intuitive understanding of the collective actions of the unit, and the importance of teamwork.”

“I do not ask in behalf of these alone, but for those also who believe in Me through their word; that they may all be one; even as Thou, Father, art in Me, and I in Thee, that they also may be in Us; that the world may believe that Thou didst send Me” (John 17:20-23 NASB).

Unity is that gift from God that comes as an answered prayer of the Son so that the world (“Satanic System,” Lewis Sperry Chafer) may know the Father sent the Son.  I have heard unity described in terms of what it is NOT, but sometimes we miss the point because we ask the wrong question.  When unity is described as NOT being uniformity, the question should be, “Did Jesus think like His Father?”  When described as NOT unanimity, the question should be, “Did Jesus and the Father completely agree?”  Those who would make the NOT arguments are those who have NOT experienced this wondrous blessing!  There is only ONE reason for NOT experiencing the Unity of the Holy Spirit — you do not belong to Jesus!  We ARE one just as Jesus and the Father are one for the purpose of the Gospel!  It requires more than teamwork, more than unit cohesion, it requires death to self that the Church may grow with Jesus Christ as the head.  If you think you can make it on your own, I suggest you put jam in both your pockets, ‘cause you’re already toast!

“But they are not connected to Christ, the head of the body. For we are joined together in his body by his strong sinews, and we grow only as we get our nourishment and strength from God” (Colossians 2:19 NLT).
“Instead we will hold to the truth in love, becoming more and more in every way like Christ, who is the head of his body, the church . Under his direction, the whole body is fitted together perfectly. As each part does its own special work, it helps the other parts grow, so that the whole body is healthy and growing and full of love” (Ephesians 4:15-16 NLT).
“The human body has many parts, but the many parts make up only one body. So it is with the body of Christ” (1 Corinthians 12:12 NLT).
“Be honest in your estimate of yourselves, measuring your value by how much faith God has given you. Just as our bodies have many parts and each part has a special function, so it is with Christ’s body. We are all parts of his one body, and each of us has different work to do. And since we are all one body in Christ, we belong to each other, and each of us needs all the others” (Romans 12:3b-5 NLT).
